Benefits of Working as a Nocturnist
Career Advice
Working as a nocturnist (i.e. working the night shift) has many benefits, whether you are a new physician or have been practicing for years.
More Flexibility to Do Things During the Day
The advantage to working a night shift means that you have more flexibility during the day to either spend with family or friends. Physician schedules can be very demanding, but many practices are willing to negotiate for shorter work times and schedules that are more accommodating. These schedules usually have fewer shifts per month than the daytime position, which means more time off. These shifts are also 9 or 10 hours long instead of 12 or more. These positions are also usually block scheduled, giving you more time off at once. This can help a lot with work-life balance, which can be more difficult to find with other positions.
Reduced Burnout Levels
Arranging your work schedule to reduce burnout is important if you want to keep enjoying your position. Many nocturnists enjoy the benefit of experiencing less burnout. Fewer hours are spent working and more can be spent with family or enjoying time off the clock.
Fewer Disruptions at Work
Unlike the busy, fast-paced environment of daytime positions, night shifts involve fewer disruptions and allow more room for a slower paced job. Some physicians like to spend time with patients at night without being rushed because they don’t have to juggle staff meetings to manage communications with other staff regarding the patient. Fewer physicians and employees on staff can also mean that a nocturnist can keep their medical and procedural skills sharp as sometimes they are the only physician on duty at night.
Less Competition and Higher Compensation for the Position
Night shifts tend to not be as appealing to many job seekers, which leaves many positions open and ready to fill. These jobs can be easier to attain and it also gives the candidate more bargaining power during the interview process. Nocturnists can also expect 10-20% higher compensation.
