Preparing for Virtual Interviews

Tips for Recruiters

Many employers are widening their tool sets to include virtual interviews during the hiring process. This is a practice that many employers should consider using for candidates that might struggle to get to an in-person meeting.

Treat the interview just as you would for an in-person interview.

Part of the process still includes dressing appropriately and reviewing the candidate’s application ahead of time. Rehearse the key questions you want to ask and think about what sort of person you would like in your open position.

Remove distractions from your screen.

While the applicant might not see everything on your screen, they deserve to be treated with respect and have your full attention. Mute your notifications for a few minutes and put away your phone.

Test your setup

Double-check your technology setup to ensure everything is running properly. You’ll want to be sure that all your equipment is working before the interview starts. Be sure to test your speaker, microphone, camera, and internet connection. This should be done far in advance before the interview as some problems are going to take more than five minutes to solve.

Give eye contact to the camera and don’t rely on a cheat sheet

While it might be tempting to look down at your notes throughout the interview, it’s still evident when you don’t maintain eye contact with the camera. While you can occasionally review your notes, you should practice what you want to say ahead of time. Be sure to prepare questions you want to ask, bring materials to share during the interview, and a notepad to take notes during the interview process.
